It is the perfect drink to enjoy during the chilly winter months and is often served at holiday parties and gatherings.

The Origins of Estonia Glögg

Glögg dates back to the Middle Ages when German merchants introduced it to the region. It is often served with traditional Estonian holiday foods such as gingerbread cookies and sauerkraut.

Found in many places throughout Estonia, as well as in other Scandinavian countries and German-speaking countries. It’s especially popular during the Christmas season and can often be found at Christmas markets and other holiday events. You will even find it in restraunts, pubs, and the grocery store.

How to Make Estonia Glögg

The recipe has evolved over time, with different regions and families adding their own unique twists to the classic recipe. You can use traditional ingredients such as red wine, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cardamom pods, and orange peel. Other variations may also include other ingredients like almonds, raisins, and ginger.

Here is one recipe to make Estonia Glögg

Ingredients:

– One bottle (750ml) sweet red wine

– 100ml spirit (vodka, rum, brandy, or whisky)

– 8 cloves

– 1 cinnamon stick

– one orange (squeezed plus zest)

– 1 lemon (squeezed plus zest)

– 3 slices fresh ginger

– Cardamom seeds from two pods

– 1 tbsp brown sugar

– 1 tsp nutmeg

– 10 tbsp almonds

– 10 tbsp raisins

Method:

1. In a large saucepan, pour the wine, orange and lemon juice, then add the cloves, cardamom seeds, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Add your spirit of choice then mix in a bit of citrus zest.

2. Cook on medium heat for 10 minutes to allow the sugar to dissolve and flavors to blend together in the wine. Do not boil, otherwise, the alcohol will evaporate.

3. Place almonds and raisins in each mug.

4. To serve, strain the mix and pour over the almonds and raisins.

5. Ensure you have a spoon at hand to scoop them up at the end.

There are many variations of each with its own unique blend of spices and alcohol. Some popular variations include non-alcoholic Estonia Glögg (replace the liquior with grape juice or apple cider), Bourbon Glögg, Aquavit Glögg, Mulled White Wine Glögg, and Sangria Estonia Glögg.

Tips for Serving Estonia Glögg

To fully enjoy the experience of Estonia Glögg, it’s important to have the right glassware. which is typically a small glass, handleless mug or cup that allows you to hold the warm drink comfortably without burning your hands. Serve with snacks like gingerbread cookies is a great way to enhance the flavors of the warming spices in the drink.
